Audiophiles at the office: What people are using today

With so many headphones out there, here’s a personal take on what the office is using right now, diving into the latest tech and what actually makes a difference day to day.

Audiophiles at the office: What people are using today

Mumbai — A quick, informal survey conducted during peak office hours offers a small but telling glimpse into how employees in India are choosing their everyday audio gear. The sample—60 colleagues across desks, meeting rooms, and break areas—is strictly local and not intended to reflect global trends or brand preferences.

Still, even this limited snapshot highlights a clear pattern: headphone choice at work is less about impulse and more about routine—driven by comfort, convenience, and the demands of a typical workday.

Unsurprisingly, Apple AirPods emerge as the most popular pick, signaling a strong preference for frictionless connectivity and ease of use. Close behind are dependable, budget-friendly options from JBL and boAt, both of which continue to resonate with users looking for value without sacrificing performance. At the higher end, devices like the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 find their niche among employees who prioritize focus and noise isolation.

What emerges isn’t just a list of popular brands—it’s a reflection of how modern work habits shape personal tech choices. From ecosystem-driven convenience to budget-conscious decisions and performance-focused upgrades, the office soundscape is quietly curated by the needs of each user.

Everyday Budget picks (Boltt, Boat)

An area where practicality is placed first over luxury or convenience. These two picks at the office are frontrunners for this category for being there when you need them the most. They are reliable at their core and work consistently while delivering an overall satisfactory experience. These headphones get the job done without any fuss. Though not complete without its fair share of cons in terms of product quality, there are a couple of advantages it has over the more premium range of audio gear.

Various positives i came across in my research was, users appreciated its low latency and rapid connection. The user was able to connect to multiple devices at once without an issue. One of the main reasons this product was selected was for its phenomenal ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) which it excels in. Despite this, the user doesn’t appreciate the use of button controls or gestures as they act as a disruptor to the overall listening experience. If the air pod falls or gets pressed by accident, it can unnecessarily play or pause a song, creating more problems rather than solutions. They handle calls, playlists, and long work hours without asking for much in return. Battery life is solid, sound is good enough for both meetings and music, and the price tag makes them an easy, no-second-thought purchase.

This was the cheapest model available in this range and the most value for money according to the user. Due to sufficient card and discount options, this choice was the most favorable. In most offices, these are the quiet workhorses doing exactly what they need to, nothing more, nothing less.

Mainstream Crowd Favorites (JBL 700 BT)

This is where familiarity meets reliability. JBL sits comfortably in this space, offering a balanced mix of sound quality, durability, and everyday usability. These are the headphones you’ll spot across desks because they rarely disappoint. JBL is known to deliver consistent sound and build quality, ranked among the highest selling audio gear in its market. During my research, I came across a satisfied user who broke down the fundamentals of selecting and buying this product.

He stated that he appreciated the Active Noise Cancellation and that he noticed this device had better highs and lows than most headphones. This quality was helpful while listening to music. Since his lifestyle involves a lot of travelling, the shuffle between ambient noise and noise cancelling helps manage the sound loudness. The headphones cost approximately ₹5000 which fit right into his budget. From a value point of view, there weren’t any other options available, but from a quality standpoint, Marshall and Sony offered good headphones at a premium. The user would confidently recommend these headphones, but with a small caveat: the leather on the ear cups tends to wear out after about seven months of regular use.

Seamless Ecosystem Picks (Apple Air pods Gen 4)

This category refers to where everything falls into place. Apple Air Pods are built for users who live within the Apple ecosystem, offering instant pairing, smooth device switching, and a frictionless experience across devices. It involves taking complete advantage of the “walled garden”, reaching full circle in the apple ecosystem. The user was extremely satisfied with the purchase as the product performed as expected. The ANC was the user’s most appreciated feature, providing a crisp sound with excellent bass. The user saw multiple buying options but went with the air pods since it provided a seamless experience complimented by the iPhone and MacBook. The gestures on the air pods for picking up calls, swiping up to play/pause music make this a game changer for a mover on the go.

The only caveat here was the connectivity to windows devices for a given situation. This is a given since Apple products are specifically designed for other apple devices.

Value-Tech Disruptors (CMF Nothing Buds Pro 2)

This is where innovative style meets smart engineering without any premium price tag. CMF Nothing Buds Pro 2 brings a fresh design language and packs in features like ANC and app controls that punch above their weight. These are True Wireless Earbuds which give the user more freedom and less baggage over the ears. It has good ANC features, is compact and packs an efficient bass boost. The sound profile leans energetic, making them just as good for focus playlists as they are for casual listening between tasks. The companion app adds a layer of control that you don’t always expect at this price, letting users tweak their experience rather than settle for defaults. The user is satisfied as this is what was expected at this price point.

There were a couple of caveats when it came to these pairs of earphones. One of them being loose and their lack of stability in the ear. There could have been a chance where they fall to the ground, get lost or completely destroyed.

Premium Noise-Cancelling Gear (Bose NC700)

This is where distractions go to disappear. Bose NC700 are built for focus, cutting through office chatter and background noise with precision. They shine during long calls too, with clear microphones that keep your voice front and center. Comfort plays a big role here, especially during extended work hours. The user appreciates the overall design of these over ear headphones. They are comfortable and can be worn for longer periods of time without adding pressure to the skull. Bose deliver their signature sound and award winning ANC, providing good bass and clarity. It has an ambient aware feature which allows the user to stay aware of their surroundings. For calls, the built-in microphone completes the job without breaking a sweat. To avoid paying full price, these headphones were bought at half the price on OLX. Despite them being second hand, they provide the same performance and get the job done.
